Apocalypse Now

jungle olive, and napalm in the morning

EverBox.Space dashboard in the Apocalypse Now theme — jungle olive, and napalm in the morning

The aesthetic

Almost all of that film is green - canopy, water, uniforms, the light itself filtered through leaves until everything shares one tint. The dials take that green and climb through it, dark to light, the way the jungle does from the riverbed up to where the sun gets in.

The orange is the other half of the image and it is deliberately small. It sits on the buttons and in the faint bloom at the edge of the background, the way a fire looks from a long way downriver: you can see it, it is clearly enormous, and it is not where you are.

What stays calm

Olive is a naturally muted colour, so this theme sits further back than most without any effort. The risk is the orange, which is why it is confined to the controls. Glass stays neutral, type is unchanged, nothing animates. The theme's whole mood is patience under heat.

Who it is for

For the countdown that is measured in months and cannot be hurried. For long projects with an unglamorous middle. And for anyone who finds something steadying in the idea of simply continuing upriver.

Apocalypse Now EverBox theme

An EverBox palette for countdowns, timers and shared spaces. Every dial sits in the same army olive, on a ground the colour of jungle at night. The controls are napalm orange, and they are the only heat on the page.

Colour palette

Four dials working up through olive: the year a dark fatigue green, the month the olive of a canvas tent, the day a dry khaki, and the hour pale scrub bleached by sun. Behind them a near-black with green in it, and panels a shade of dark moss above that. The controls take a burning orange — one colour on the horizon, and nothing else in the theme goes near it.
