Kill Bill

that yellow, and what happens next

EverBox.Space dashboard in the Kill Bill theme — that yellow, and what happens next

The aesthetic

The yellow is doing a specific job in that film: it is the only thing in frame that is not brown, grey or blood, so your eye goes to it and stays there. A dashboard can use the same trick. The dials run from a dark brass at the year up to the full tracksuit yellow at the hour, and because nothing else on the page competes, the clock is simply the thing you look at.

Red is the second colour and it is rationed. It appears on the buttons and nowhere else - not in the background, not in the type, not as a border on anything that is not a control. In a film about a very organised person doing a very violent thing, restraint is the whole style.

What stays calm

Yellow at full saturation is the loudest colour in this entire theme set, which is why everything else recedes further than usual. The ground is almost black with the faintest warm cast. Glass cards keep their neutral translucency. Typography is untouched. The only thing permitted to be bright is the dial.

Who it is for

For a countdown you are absolutely going to see through. For work that needs a bit of edge rather than a bit of calm. And for anyone who wants a dashboard that looks like it has a list and is working steadily down it.

Kill Bill EverBox theme

An EverBox palette for countdowns, timers and shared spaces. Every dial sits in the same tracksuit yellow, on a ground of black with a warm cast. The controls are blood red, and there is only one of them.

Colour palette

Four dials brightening through yellow: the year a dark olive-gold, the month a mustard, the day a full chrome yellow, and the hour the exact yellow of the jumpsuit under studio light. The ground behind is near-black with a warm tint, the panels a dark tobacco. The controls take a deep arterial red — used once, and meant.
