Grand Budapest

faded hotel pink, once grand, still trying

EverBox.Space dashboard in the Grand Budapest theme — faded hotel pink, once grand, still trying

The aesthetic

Anderson's pink is not a soft pink - it is a confident, slightly absurd pink applied to an enormous building, and the joke is that the building is falling apart underneath it. The dials run from a deep plum through to that pink, which is the closest this app gets to cheerful.

Gold is the brass fittings, and it belongs on the controls: the bell you ring, the key you are handed, the button you press. It is the second colour in almost every frame of that film for exactly the same reason.

What stays calm

A pink dashboard could very easily become a novelty, so the discipline here is the same as everywhere else: colour lives in the dials, the background and the controls, and never in the body text. The ground is a deep plum rather than a neutral black, which keeps the pink from looking pasted on.

Who it is for

For countdowns to things you are looking forward to. For anyone tired of dashboards that all look like server monitoring. And for the person who thinks a small daily interface may as well be charming.

Grand Budapest EverBox theme

An EverBox palette for countdowns, timers and shared spaces. Every dial sits in the same confectioner's pink, on a ground of deep plum-black. The controls are brass, like the fittings in a lobby nobody has updated since 1932.

Colour palette

Four dials brightening through pink: the year a dark wine, the month a raspberry, the day a full fondant pink, and the hour the pale rose of icing. The ground is near-black with red-violet in it, the panels a dark mulberry. The controls take a soft antique gold — the lift grille, the bell, the buttons on a uniform.
